Your Wellbeing, My Priority

Before she is a doctor, Denise is a wife and a mother, and it is from these roles that her deepest professional convictions have grown.

Dr Denise Sproul is an experienced Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a particular interest in reproductive medicine and fertility. She obtained her MBChB from the University of Cape Town in 2011 and went on to complete her MMed and Fellowship in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (FCOG) through Stellenbosch University and the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2019. In 2024, she was awarded her MSc in Clinical Epidemiology, Cum Laude, from Stellenbosch University.

Denise’s own deeply personal journey with conception and fertility was a defining chapter in her life, one that shaped not only her understanding of the emotional weight carried by women navigating this path, but ultimately drew her towards specialising in reproductive medicine. It is a calling rooted in lived experience, empathy, and an unwavering desire to walk alongside women facing similar struggles.

The birth of her own child further deepened this purpose, inspiring her current PhD research at Stellenbosch University, where she is investigating safe infant sleep practices, a topic born directly from the profound responsibility and wonder of becoming a mother herself. She is simultaneously enrolled in a Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine at Stellenbosch University, with her subspecialty training continuing through to December 2027.

Denise is a committed academic and researcher. She has published in the South African Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SAJOG), with additional publications accepted in the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, PLOS ONE, and the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IJOG). She has presented her research at national and international conferences, including the RCOG World Congress in Oman, the EndoDubai Conference, and the SASOG National Conference, where she placed third. She serves as a journal reviewer for The Cochrane Collaboration and the IJOG, and was appointed FIGO World Congress Ambassador in 2021.

Denise is deeply committed to the continual refinement of her surgical skills, with a particular dedication to minimally invasive surgical techniques. She has actively pursued advanced training through the internationally recognised GESEA/Winners programme, obtaining her Level 1 Certification in 2020 and completing GESEA Advanced Suturing in 2022, alongside practical endoscopy training through the Storkz and EndoDubai Anatomy workshops. This commitment is not incidental, it is a cornerstone of her clinical philosophy. Minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopic surgery offer patients significantly reduced recovery times, less post-operative discomfort, and smaller incisions, allowing women to return to their families and daily lives sooner. These techniques demand a higher degree of surgical precision and ongoing skill development, a challenge Denise embraces wholeheartedly. Notably, her very first published research explored the feasibility and advantages of laparoscopic surgery for ectopic pregnancy in a South African hospital setting, demonstrating that this has been a professional conviction from the earliest days of her career.

Her commitment to the profession extends beyond clinical and academic work. Denise served as Chair of the South African Association of Trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SAATOG) from 2020 to 2022, represented South Africa at the World Association of Trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (WATOG), and is an active Next Generation member and committee member of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS). She contributed to the SASOG BetterOBS Congress in 2025 and holds certification in FIGO IVF hands-on training.

Denise currently runs her private practice at Durbanville MediClinic in Cape Town, providing comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological care, including antenatal management, delivery, fertility consultations, minimally invasive surgery, and general gynaecology. She is fluent in both English and Afrikaans.

At her core, Denise believes that every woman deserves compassionate, evidence-based care, delivered by someone who truly understands the journey.
